Founded in 1994, the Halifax Mooseheads organization has been actively involved in the community. Through out the regular season, players take time out of their busy schedule to appreciate how fortunate they are. The players take their roles in the community very seriously and enjoy spending time with their youngest fans. The players have been eagerly participating in weekly visits to the IWK Grace Hospital, schools in the HRM, special events and fundraisers, minor hockey jamborees, and sponsor events such as Tim Horton’s Camp Day, McDonalds McHappy Day, and Miracle Day.
IWK-Health Centre Visits
On the sixth floor of the IWK Health Centre, there is the Teen Lounge. The Halifax Mooseheads players along side with the Child Life Division of the IWK, on a bi-weekly basis visit the children in the Teen Lounge for the afternoon. The players spend the afternoon playing air hockey, coloring, playing board games, shooting pool, playing musical instruments, chatting or simply listening to the children. The players also participate in room visits, where they are accompanied by a child life specialists. These visits are for the patients who are unable to physically be transported to the Teen Lounge. This program is truly special and one which the players cherish. The players form bonds with these children and quickly realize how fortunate they are to have their health. The players often arrive with small gifts for the patients such as hockey cards, t-shirts and calendars. By the end of the season, the players become very familiar with the children and friendships are built that last a lifetime.
If your child or a child you know is spending time at the IWK please contact the IWK Teen Lounge for upcoming Moose visits.
Throughout the regular season, the players along with officers from the One-on-One program visit local schools. These visits are truly beneficial for both the students and the players. During these visits, students have the opportunity to listen to the players speak on various topics such as; the importance of literacy, staying in school, bullying, peer pressure, saying no to drugs, and the significance of setting goals. The players also answer questions and sign autographs. Taking into consideration the age of the students and the particular topic which the school administration believes is most important, the players prepare in advance the agenda of the particular visit.
