Remparts defeat Moose

The Halifax Mooseheads’ waning playoff hopes took another hit Friday night.

In Quebec, the Eastern Division-leading Remparts jumped out in front by two goals and held on to edge the Mooseheads 3-1, while the Lewiston Maineiacs went into Rimouski and upset the Oceanic 7-5 to put more distance between themselves and their pursuers.

In front of a crowd of 13,712 at the Colisee Pepsi, Mikhail Stefanovich scored his 16th of the year at 9:23 of the first period to put the Remparts up 1-0 and Matthew Brown notched the eventual winner at 5:30 of the second while Quebec was playing a man short.

Brent Andrews gave the Mooseheads a lift when he buried his fourth of the season with 10 seconds remaining in a power play early in the third frame but Jonathan Audy-Marchessault put the game out of reach when he tallied his 24th at 11:48.

Peter Delmas turned aside 27 of 30 scoring chances in the Mooseheads net while Remparts goalkeeper Louis Domingue kicked out 26 of 27 shots, marking the third time in four games an opposing netminder has limited the Halifax attack to one goal.

With time running out on their QMJHL season, the Mooseheads slipped two points further behind the Maineiacs, who hold down the 16th and final playoff berth. Halifax started its three-game road swing by downing the Maineiacs 6-5 in a shootout Wednesday night but now trails Lewiston by 13 points.

Halifax, last in the league with an 11-36-1-3 record, wraps up its road trip today against the Shawinigan Cataractes (24-20-3-4), who got past the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 5-4 in overtime Friday.
