Timo Meier became the latest in a string of Mooseheads to be taken in the first round of the NHL Entry draft this summer when the San Jose Sharks used the ninth overall selection on the Swiss forward.
The 18-year-old was the fourth member of the Mooseheads in three years to go in the top 10 after Nikolaj Ehlers (ninth overall 2014 – Jets), Nathan MacKinnon (first overall 2013 – Avalanche) & Jonathan Drouin (third overall 2013 – Lightning).
To say Meier is looking forward to his first NHL training camp experience would be an understatement.
“I’m really looking forward to that,” he said.
“I know it’s going to be a big challenge for me and obviously I want to make the NHL this year but I know there’s a great organization to come back to here in Halifax and I love it here.”
The Mooseheads forward will leave on Wednesday, September 9th to participate in the rookie tournament before taking part in the Sharks main camp. He said he’s in a similar position as Nikolaj Ehlers last year.
“We’re really good friends so we talk a lot and I talked to him about how it is at NHL camp so I will just go there and give my best and be myself and work hard.”
Meier enjoyed a breakout season in the QMJHL last season when he scored 44 goals and 46 assists for the Mooseheads which included an impressive 27-game point streak stretching from November 2nd to February 26th.
Halifax defenceman Cavan Fitzgerald will be joining Meier at the San Jose rookie camp after getting a free agent invitation with an assist going to Timo on NHL draft weekend.
“It was the second night of the draft and I was actually at the mall when I got a call from one of the San Jose scouts and he was asking me about Cavy.
“You know obviously I wasn’t lying to him when I told him about what kind of great person and hockey player he is so he asked me for his number and I’m just really happy that there’s someone I know that’ll be there with me.”
With all of the excitement of NHL camp on the horizon, Meier seems to be taking everything in stride and keeping a mature and professional attitude.
“I’m trying to take every moment as it comes and not thinking too far ahead. I just want to take it day by day and show up and work hard wherever I am.”
The Mooseheads will begin the 2015-2016 QMJHL regular season on the road in Charlottetown on Friday, September 11th and will also visit Saint John the following night.
Home opening weekend is set for Friday, September 18th at 7pm at Scotiabank Centre as the Acadie-Bathurst Titan visit Halifax, while the Sea Dogs are in town on Saturday, September 19th at 7pm.
