Moose Win Pre-Season Debut 7-3
Hockey is back in Moose Country and the Moose picked up right where they left off with a 7-3 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at the Halifax Forum.
The Mooseheads jumped out to a 1-0 lead when veteran defenceman Brendan Duke blasted one home from the point on the powerplay. The Mooseheads used a little American flavor to take a 2-0 lead. The Moynihan brothers, 16yr old Connor and 18yr old Daniel, flashed some skill which resulted in a Matt Murphy goal at the goalmouth. The Moose took that 2-0 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes.
Tim Simard cut the Moose lead in half early in the 2nd going top shelf on Kevin Darveau. Liam Alcalde and Matt Donnelly dropped the gloves shortly after a big Alcalde hit in front of the Mooseheads bench got everyone’s attention. Shortly after the spirited bout, Vincent Watt buried his first of the preseason banging one in while parked in front of the net on the powerplay. The Moose maintained their 2 goal lead taking a 3-1 advantage after the first 40 minutes of play.
Luca Ciampini and Jonathan Lacroix-Courville would help break the game open early in the third giving the Moose a 5-1 lead which put the game out of reach. Rapheal Corriveau got one back for the Screaming Eagles before Andrew Ryan restored the 4 goal lead making it 6-2. Connor Moynihan scored shortly after Ryan to give the Moose a 7-2 lead capitalizing on some sloppy play by the Eagles in their end. The Eagles would get another one back but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Herd coasted to a 7-3 win in their pre-season debut. Kevin Darveau picked up the win in goal for the Moose.
The Moose will now travel to Sydney on Sunday for a pre-season rematch with the Eagles at 4pm. The next home pre-season game for the Mooseheads will be in Truro next Friday night when they take on the Moncton Wildcats at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre at 7pm.
